How Much Electricity Does Solar Generate in Lucknow?

By Deepak Sharma, NCS Solar, LucknowPublished 24 September 2026

Short answer: a well-installed, shade-free 1 kW solar system in Lucknow generates about 4.3 units a day on average, or roughly 1,590 units a year. A 3 kW home system gives around 400 units a month on average — more in spring, less in the monsoon.

Year: about 1,588 units per kW, or 4,763 units for a 3 kW system.

Modelled with PVGIS (European Commission Joint Research Centre) using 2005–2020 weather data for Lucknow, panels fixed at the optimum tilt facing south, and 14% system losses.

How this compares with MNRE's figure

MNRE’s rooftop solar FAQ says a 1 kW plant generates 4 to 5.5 units on a clear sunny day. The Lucknow averages above fall in that range for most of the year and drop below it in the monsoon months, when cloudy days pull the average down.

What changes your output

  • Shade — even partial shade from a water tank, parapet or tree cuts output sharply.
  • Tilt and direction — south-facing at around 30° is best in Lucknow; flatter or east/west-facing panels produce less.
  • Dust — dusty panels lose output; regular cleaning keeps them near their rating.
  • Weather — monsoon cloud and winter fog vary from year to year.
  • Age — panels lose a small amount of output each year, as set out in the manufacturer’s warranty.

Turning units into a system size

Divide your average monthly units by about 130 (units per kW per month in Lucknow) for a rough system size. A home using 300 units a month needs around 2.3 kW; 400 units needs around 3 kW. We confirm the size against your roof and bills at the site survey.
